Webinars on Population and Housing Census in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is undertaking a population, housing and establishment census during the year 2022, using technology during all its stages  and data collection using combined methods, including administrative registers data, self-enumeration via the Internet and telephone, as well as face-to-face via an electronic form using a tablet. In line with the on-going technical cooperation between KSA’s General Authority for Statistics (GAS) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the two parties organized a series of webinars aimed at providing technical advice during the planning phase of the census by reviewing the progress made, future steps, methodologies, concepts and methods of enumeration of population and housing to be in line with international recommendations and national needs, specifically, the concepts of de jury and de facto, time reference, usual place of residence, education data in the household form, self-enumeration method and the role of technology for census quality control, analysis, dissemination and promotion of censuses.

The webinars concluded with a set of recommendations, the most important of which are to benefit from the experiences of countries that applied the method of self-enumeration using the Internet and to complete quality control procedures and ensure their effectiveness during pilot testing, in addition to continuing capacity building programs for census personnel and technical cooperation during all stages of the census (2022-2023) including evaluation of pilot testing, international concepts and recommendations, quality assurance framework, post-enumeration survey and evaluation and use of census data.
