Within the framework of UNESCWA’s programs on supporting the market competition and MSMEs in the Arab region, UNCTAD and UNESCWA organized a virtual regional dialogue on 8 April 2021 in collaboration with the Egyptian Competition Authority. The webinar was titled “Regional Dialogue: The Role of Competition Policy in Supporting MSMEs Economic Recovery in the Post COVID-19 Crisis”.
The regional dialogue brought together policymakers, competition authorities and MSME representatives to discuss how competition policy can support MSMEs’ recovery. UNCATD presented the policy recommendations of their recently released report on the interface between competition policy and MSMEs market access. UNESCWA presented its work on the impact of COVID-19 on economies in the Arab region. Arab countries and competition authorities shared their experiences in dealing with the market competition challenges that emerged during the pandemic and discussed the mitigation measures taken to help reduce the MSMEs loss. Also, the participants engaged in an informative Q&A session that addressed a variety of topics related to market structure, competition law and policy, and state support.
