The objective of this virtual expert group meeting, organized in partnership between the Centre for Women at the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’ Empowerment (UN WOMEN), is to discuss approaches and methodologies to estimate the opportunity cost of achieving the SDGs in the Arab region.

The meeting also aims to examine a draft report outlining methodologies related to estimating the opportunity cost for SDG 5.1 -  'End all forms of discrimination against all females everywhere'; SDG 5.2 - 'Eliminate all forms of violence against all females in the public and private spheres including trafficking, sexual and other types of exploitation'; and SDG 5.4 - 'Recognise and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate'.

The meeting brings together experts to discuss approaches and methodologies introduced, tools and data needed to calculate the opportunity cost and how such an exercise would enhance efforts and frame future work to achieve SDGs by the year 2030.
