The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) are holding an online event to celebrate the Desertification and Drought Day 2021 (DDD 2021) on 17 June 2021. As announced by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), this year’s theme is: "Restoration. Land. Recovery. We build back better with healthy land,” which aims to drive actions towards the protection and restoration of natural ecosystems as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aiming to better contribute to the overall achievement of the DDD 2021 theme, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and the United Nations Office of Information and Communication Technologies (UN-OICT), launched the DDD 2021 Youth Challenge: Restoring Degraded Land in the Arab Region.
The event will feature a panel of expert who will explore potential actions needed to protect and restore the land in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as discussion among youth on their role in restoring degraded land in the Arab Region. Further, the video challenge winners will be announced.
